Tenerife South Airport: Everything You Need to Know Before You Land (and Before You Leave)

tenerife airport

Tenerife South Airport is where your holiday to the south of Tenerife begins and ends. For most British tourists, TFS is a familiar airport after one or two visits: the arrivals hall, the taxi rank, the queue for car hire, and the slightly anxious wait at the departures gate on the way home. But for first-time visitors, or for anyone who wants to navigate it more efficiently than last time, a clear, practical guide makes a genuine difference to how the first and last days of a holiday feel.

This guide covers everything you need to know about Tenerife South Airport from the perspective of a British tourist heading to Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, or Playa de las Américas. Arrivals, transport options, the EES border process, terminal facilities, departures, and the practical tips that make the difference between a smooth start and a stressful one.

The Basics: What TFS Actually Is

Tenerife South Airport handled nearly 14 million passengers in 2025, with the vast majority being tourists. The top ten busiest international routes all serve UK and European cities. Manchester, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Birmingham, East Midlands, and London Heathrow are all among the busiest routes, which means TFS is effectively a British tourist airport for much of the year.

The airport has a single terminal spread across three levels. The ground floor handles arrivals, baggage reclaim, customs, and transport access. The first floor handles departures, with security checkpoints, boarding gates, and a commercial area of shops and restaurants. TFS is located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona on the southeastern coast, approximately 15 minutes by road from Los Cristianos and 20 to 25 minutes from Costa Adeje.

Arrivals at Tenerife South Airport

Landing at TFS on a clear Tenerife day is one of the more pleasant airport arrival experiences in Europe. The approach over the southern coast gives your first proper view of the island: the volcanic landscape, the resort strip along the coast, and often Teide above the cloud line to the north.

Once you land, follow the signs for Arrivals and Passport Control. The walking distance from the furthest gate to passport control is around eight minutes and the terminal is well signposted in English and Spanish. The airport is compact enough that it is difficult to get genuinely lost.

Use the Correct Queue at Passport Control
British passport holders are non-EU third country nationals and must use the non-EU lanes, marked as All Passports, Third Country Nationals, or similar. Do not join the EU/EEA queue. The EU lanes use automated e-passport gates and British passports will not work in them since Brexit.

Passport Control and the EES Border System

Since 6 November 2025, Tenerife South Airport has operated the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) for all non-EU arrivals including British passport holders. EES is a biometric border registration system that records your entry and exit digitally rather than stamping your passport. It became fully operational on 10 April 2026.

What Happens at EES on Your First Visit
You will be asked to provide a facial scan (photograph) and fingerprints at a kiosk or manned booth. This takes around one to two minutes. On subsequent visits within three years, your passport is scanned and matched against the existing record, which is faster. Children under 12 do not need to provide fingerprints but do need their photograph taken. Each person must register individually.
Allow Extra Time at Passport Control in 2026
Since EES launched in November 2025, processing times at non-EU lanes are longer than they were before. Both the British Embassy and local Tenerife authorities have urged passengers to arrive earlier than usual. Having your passport open at the photo page, your phone away, and documents accessible makes the process as fast as possible.

For the full picture on EES, ETIAS, the 90-day rule, and everything else that has changed for UK visitors since Brexit, see our dedicated guide to the new EU border rules for UK visitors to Tenerife.

Baggage Reclaim

After passport control you proceed directly to the baggage hall. The belt number for your flight is shown on screens throughout the arrivals area. The wait for bags is typically 20 to 40 minutes from landing depending on the flight.

Car Hire Queue Tip
If you are planning to hire a car, send one person directly to the car hire desk while the others wait for bags. Car hire queues at TFS can be very long at busy arrival times, and getting someone in the queue early while bags are still being unloaded can save 30 to 45 minutes.
Baggage Facilities
Baggage trolleys are available in the reclaim hall and are free to use. Left luggage facilities are available in the terminal if you need to store bags before your transfer or accommodation is ready.

Bus from Tenerife South Airport

The public bus is the cheapest option and perfectly practical for visitors travelling light without small children.

Key Bus Routes from TFS
Line 40 and Line 111 both serve the airport, running to Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas, and Costa Adeje. Line 40 runs every 30 to 40 minutes from early morning until around 10pm. Line 111 is an express service. Journey to Los Cristianos approximately 23 minutes. Fare approximately €1.60 to €3.50 with the Ten+ card. Night bus Line 711 serves the airport corridor for late arrivals. Check the current timetable at titsa.com before travelling.
Buy the Ten+ Card at the Airport
The vending machine in the arrivals area sells the Ten+ rechargeable travel card before you leave the terminal. It costs €2 plus whatever credit you load and gives an immediate 20 to 30 percent discount on every bus journey. For more on the bus network, see our guide to getting around south Tenerife without a car.

Taxis from Tenerife South Airport

Taxis from TFS are metered, regulated, and safe. The taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals exit. Cream coloured with a green stripe. No negotiation and no haggling: the meter starts when you get in and the fare shown when you arrive is the fare you pay.

Typical Taxi Fares from TFS
Los Cristianos: approximately €20 to €30. Playa de las Américas: approximately €22 to €32. Costa Adeje: approximately €25 to €35. Journey approximately 15 to 25 minutes depending on destination and traffic. Surcharge applies for luggage in the boot and for night and weekend travel. No advance booking needed. Join the queue at the rank.
Queues at the Taxi Rank
Queues at the taxi rank can be long during peak arrival times, particularly when several flights land close together. This is one reason pre-booked transfers are worth considering for busy summer arrivals.

Pre-Booked Transfers

A pre-booked private transfer gives you a driver waiting with your name on a sign in the arrivals hall. No queuing at a taxi rank, no navigating a bus, no waiting for other passengers to be dropped off at different hotels. Prices for a private vehicle for up to four passengers from TFS typically start from around €25 to €40. Search for TFS airport transfers on Google to compare current prices. Booking two to three weeks in advance generally gives the best rates.

When a Pre-Booked Transfer Is Worth It
Families with young children and a lot of luggage. Late night arrivals when you want maximum simplicity. Busy summer arrivals where taxi rank queues can be long. If your package holiday includes a transfer, you already have this covered.

Car Hire at Tenerife South Airport

All major international car hire companies have desks at TFS: Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, and Budget, alongside local Canarian companies which often offer competitive rates. Pre-booking online before you travel is strongly recommended. Walk-in prices are significantly higher than advance booking rates.

Book Online Before You Travel
A small economy car pre-booked online for a week typically starts from around €100 to €180 depending on the season. Peak summer prices are significantly higher. Booking three to four months in advance gives the best rates for July and August travel. Comparison sites such as Rentalcars.com and Kayak aggregate prices across multiple providers.
Two Things That Catch People Out at TFS Car Hire Desks
First, insurance. The basic insurance in most online bookings covers the minimum required by Spanish law but leaves you liable for a significant excess. Desk staff will offer full coverage to eliminate this. Check your travel insurance before you travel to understand what excess protection you already have. Second, fuel policy. Most cars are rented full and must be returned full. Fill up at a petrol station on the TF-1 motorway near the airport exit, not at the airport itself.
On-Site vs Off-Site Car Hire
Some smaller local companies operate from outside the airport perimeter and require a brief shuttle transfer to their depot, adding 15 to 20 minutes to the process. Check whether your chosen company has a desk in the terminal or operates off-site before comparing prices.

Departures at Tenerife South Airport

The departures process at TFS is on the first floor of the terminal. Check-in desks are on the ground floor. You proceed upstairs to security after dropping bags.

There Is a Second Passport Control Checkpoint in Departures
This is the single most important piece of information for departing passengers in 2026 and is not widely known. After security and duty free, there is a secondary passport control checkpoint positioned deep airside before the gate areas (A, B, and C zones). You are not at your gate until you have cleared this second checkpoint. From the security exit, walking to the entrance of this checkpoint takes around 10 to 15 minutes. The EES exit recording process then adds a further 20 to 45 minute processing buffer. If you do not know this checkpoint exists and assume you are “nearly at the gate” after clearing security, you will be wrong.
How Early to Arrive for Departure in 2026
Allow at least two and a half to three hours before your flight during peak season. The standard airline recommendation is to arrive earlier than usual while EES settles in during 2026. If you are returning a hire car, add 30 minutes to your airport arrival time.
Getting to the Airport for Departure
Taxi from Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos: approximately €25 to €35, journey 20 to 25 minutes. Bus Line 40 or Line 450 from the resort areas also serves the airport. If returning a hire car, the rental return area is signposted from the main airport approach road.
Night Departures
If your flight departs in the early hours, check which facilities will be open when you arrive. The airport operates 24 hours but not all shops and restaurants maintain their usual hours through the night. The departures lounge is open throughout, but food and drink options are more limited late at night.

Departures Hall Facilities

Once through security on the first floor, the departures hall has approximately 19 shops and 13 cafés and restaurants in the commercial area. Prices are at airport level throughout.

FacilityDetails
Food and drinkBurger King, Caffé Ritazza, O’Learys, Upper Crust among others. Budget around €8 to €12 for a coffee and sandwich, €6 to €9 for a pint
Duty freePerfume, alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics, confectionery. Alcohol and tobacco are competitive given the Canary Islands’ special tax status. Canarian rum, mojo sauce, and local wines available as souvenirs
Free WiFiSame free unlimited WiFi as arrivals, throughout the departures area. Connect before you head through security
Charging pointsAvailable in the departures area. A fully charged phone is essential for digital boarding passes and travel apps
VIP loungeMontaña Roja lounge on the first floor after security. See section below

The Montaña Roja VIP Lounge

TFS has one VIP lounge, the Montaña Roja, located on the first floor after security in the departures area. The name refers to the red volcanic cone visible from the southern coast near El Médano.

Montaña Roja VIP Lounge

LocationFirst floor, departures area, after security
Walk-up priceApproximately €44.60 at the door
Pre-book priceApproximately €25 to €30 when booked in advance via aena.es
Access viaPriority Pass, LoungeKey, DragonPass, business and first class tickets
Maximum stay4 hours
FacilitiesHot and cold catering, beverages, WiFi, computers, newspapers, television, showers, terrace
How to bookaena.es. Search for Montaña Roja lounge for the pre-book rate
Is It Worth Paying For?
For a three-hour departure wait, the pre-booked cost of around €25 to €30 per person is, for many travellers, a reasonable trade for a considerably more comfortable wait than the main departures area. For a 45-minute wait before boarding, less so.

Practical Tips for Both Directions

Download Your Boarding Pass Before You Arrive
Have it saved offline so it works without WiFi. More convenient than paper at every stage of the departure process.
Have Your Passport Ready Before the Booth
At both arrivals and departures, passport open at the photo page before you reach the front of the queue. Saves time for you and everyone behind you.
Currency
The Canary Islands use euros. If you need cash on arrival, ATMs in the terminal dispense euros at better rates than the airport currency exchange counters. Withdrawing with a low or no foreign transaction fee card gives the best value.
Check Your Bag Weight Before Departure Day
Excess baggage charges at TFS check-in desks are significant. Weighing your bags at the hotel the evening before you leave saves an unpleasant surprise at the check-in queue.
Fill Up Your Hire Car Before the Airport
There are petrol stations clearly signposted on the TF-1 motorway near the airport exit. Do not leave filling up until you are at the airport itself. Fill up before you turn off for the airport.
